Why Snow is Beneficial
It may seem as if snow is only associated with more bad news than good and a handful of things might come to mind when you hear that we are getting snow. However, did you know that snow fall has a variety of benefits? Who knew!
Serving as a Workout
With the snow accumulating, we do whatever we can to get rid of it. Shoveling, plowing, and even walking in the snow can be equivalent to any workout. If you have ever walked on sand, you will know that walking on snow can add just as much resistance to your steps. Snowshoeing for one hour can burn up to 500 calories and shoveling snow can burn up to 200 calories every half hour. Mother Nature may be doing us a favor, so the gym may not be necessary for this season after all. We all know how easy it is to stay indoor and “hibernate” which makes it easy to skip a small workout. The snow gives us a reason to get out and get active.
It is estimated that about 40% of employees do not take advantage of vacation days even if it is paid time off. We get it, there are plenty of things that need to get done, but give yourself a break. When you get a snow day, take advantage of doing less work and more play. Catch up on your favorite TV shows, plan out some crafts to keep the kids busy, or just take a breather. This is a way of mother nature forcing you to “chill out”.
Grass and Plants Need Snow
When snow falls onto your lawn, it is a good thing. Snow can act as an insulator for your grass and plants. It protects against the harsh winds of the Winter and allows the roots to continue to grow. Having a snow blanket also reduces the insect population which means that it should not be as big of a problem for the upcoming season. As the snow slowly melts, it can also serve as a way of making sure your plants and grass stay hydrated. This could result in healthy plants and grass when Spring comes back around.
Some Businesses Depend on Snow
There are plenty of destinations that attract tourism due to the snow activities: skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, the list goes on! Activities like this heavily rely on the snow and without it, there is no business. Businesses for snow plowing and shoveling also rely on the snow. One other business that you may not have thought of is the clothing business: specifically stores that sell winter wear. They have a big increase in sales once the temperatures being to decrease. Did You Know…
- Snow and cold weather acts as a natural pain reliever. Cold weather slows down our body’s circulation and reduces swelling as it restricts our blood vessels.
- A metabolism boost also comes from the cold. Believe it or not, shivering can increase your metabolism up to five times more than your normal rate.
- Each snowflake has exactly 6 sides each.
- 80% of Earth’s fresh water is frozen as either ice or snow.
- Snow is actually clear. It appears white as crystals begin to form together and as color starts to reflect on it.
Like every season, winter comes with its pros and cons. This season, try to take a look at things from a different perspective. Knowing the way Michigan is, we know that the weather could change at any moment and snow will be here when we least expect it. Enjoy the “white blanket” while it is here; it can disappear sooner than you think.
